There's no holiday song called "Creating vs. Consuming vs. Recharging at Christmas," but perhaps there ought to be. Figuring out work-life balance is trying in any season, but never more difficult than during the holidays. (more)

Creating a Holiday That Satisfies
What kind of gift do you appreciate most? A handmade picture drawn by a child, or a widget bought at a gift store?
This month in View from the Porch, I raise the question of why it is so hard, as adults, to retain the impulsive creativity of children, and to resolve to think more like a child in the future.
In response to that question, I'm providing all of us with some links and quotations on the subject of playfulness and creativity. I hope you enjoy them and that you find much happiness this holiday season.
If you have an idea for an invention, check out the Edison Nation web site.
If you have forgotten how to dance, or how to laugh for six minutes straight, the “Evolution of Dance” video from YouTube has over 185 million views:
A Japanese Proverb says:
““We are fools whether we dance or not,
so we might as well dance.”
Oscar Wilde once said, “I played with an idea, and grew wilful; tossed it into the air; transformed it; let it escape and recaptured it; made it iridescent with fancy, and winged it with paradox.”
“Creativity is a characteristic given to all human beings at birth.” Abraham Maslow
“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” Pablo Picasso
And Some Personal Favorites
“What work I have done I have done because it has been play. If it had been work, I shouldn't have done it.”
Mark Twain
My alphabet starts with this letter called yuzz. It's the letter I use to spell yuzz-a-ma-tuzz. You'll be sort of surprised what there is to be found once you go beyond 'Z' and start poking around! Dr. Seuss
“I play with microbes. There are, of course, many rules to this play…but when you have acquired knowledge and experience it is very pleasant to break the rules and to be able to find something nobody has thought of.” Alexander Fleming
